I spend my life chasing the last half-hour of light.
My name is Bianca Dafny. I live in the Algarve, and this is where I photograph people: weddings, families, couples and brands.
I started by accident, with a borrowed camera and a habit of photographing everyone around me. I realised quickly that perfect portraits didn't interest me. What interested me was the half-second after the laugh, before the face composes itself again.
I moved south and never managed to leave. There's something about the light here — the Vilamoura pine woods in August, the Lagos cliffs in November, the Ria Formosa at any hour — that still strikes me as excessive. I learned the region on foot and by car, at absurd hours, looking for places that weren't worn out yet.
I always work with natural light. I direct little and watch a lot. I almost never ask anyone to look at me.
- A conversation first, to understand who you are and what makes you laugh.
- Simple, concrete direction. Never “smile at the camera”.
- Respect for children's timing and for anyone who hates being photographed.
- Faithful editing: skin with texture, Algarve colours, no trend filters.
- Deadlines met. Always.
- Portuguese, English and Spanish — and infinite patience in all three.
I'm not the fastest or the cheapest photographer in the Algarve. I take on few jobs each month because I like knowing your children's names before I arrive, and because editing a gallery takes however long it takes.
In return, you get photographs that need no explanation. Twenty years from now, someone will pick them up and understand exactly what it was like to be there.
